Super Cool Project from Yahoo!

Yes, Yahoo. Actually, Yahoo!'s Media Innovation Group-- We hope they haven't been decimated by the recent layoffs (anyone know if these are rumors or not?), because this News Globe project is amazing. They've been doing some incredible stuff with Flash-- really innovative. The NewsGlobe consists of three basic pieces: a Yahoo News Top Stories RSS feed, a geo-encoding web service from Yahoo! Maps, and a free, open-source library of 3D classes for ActionScript 3 called Papervision3D. The application loads the Y! News RSS feed every few minutes and extracts the dateline for each story.

Marathon Sadness

A tragic day for marathon fans today as Ryan Shay passes away inexplicably at mile 5 of the Olympic trials. An Olympic favorite, Ryan Shay was running with his good friend Ryan Hall and other "usual suspects" to compete for the US Olympic team in New York City today, on the eve of the great NYC Marathon, which happens tomorrow morning.

An article in the NY Times describes the shock and disbelief at the sudden death of this fit 28-year-old whom many people admired.

Mac Market Share Now 6.38%

Interesting news. Sounds like the Intel Macs were a bit conversion-booster.

from Apple 2.0:

Apple's (AAPL) market share has grown to 6.38% according to a new survey by Net Applications (details here). The results are based on a survey of browser visits to some 40,000 URLs and break the stats down between non-Intel (4.29%) and Intel (2.09%) machines. According to MacDailyNews, which has been tracking these numbers, this represents an increase of 2.05% over the past six months.

Cyborg Flying Rats Invade China

from Wired magazine's Danger Room: (read it there)
"
The People's Daily Online reports that scientists in China have successfully used brain implants in pigeons to control the birds' movement:

Pigeon_spy

Scientists with the Robot Engineering Technology Research Center of east China's Shandong University of Science and Technology say they implanted micro electrodes in the brain of a pigeon so they can command it to fly right or left or up or down.

The implants stimulated different areas of the pigeon's brain according to signals sent by the scientists via computer, and forced the bird to comply with their commands.

"It's the first such successful experiment on a pigeon in the world," said the lead researcher, who hopes the work will have "practical use" in the future.

In the United States, similar work on animals has been of interest to the military. For example, the pigeon news follows the equally amusing animal tale about the Pentagon's attempts at creating remote controlled shark spies. Like the Chinese pigeon experiment, the sharks had brain implants used to control their movements.

But don't hold your breath waiting for animal spies to roam the world anytime soon. One of the most infamous would-be animal espionage projects, dubbed Acoustic Kitty, dates back to the 1960s, when the CIA wired a furry feline to eavesdrop. On its trial run, the cat was run over by a car.
